Four people are dead after a driver with a history of violence and drug and mental health issues mowed down pedestrians in Melbourne's CBD, ending a crime rampage of almost 12 hours.

A 10-year-old child and a man and a woman in their 30s were among those killed, while police announced a fourth person died at around 9pm on Friday night.

Five people had been in a critical condition, including a three-month-old baby and children aged two, nine and 12.

More than 20 people in total were injured in the attacks, which police say are not terror-related.

Dimitrious 'Jimmy' Gargasoulas' crime spree began about 2am and ended just before 2pm when police fired several shots, wounding the 26-year-old in the arm, and his car crashed.

Gargasoulas was under police guard in hospital on Friday night.

Police commissioner Graham Ashton said Gargasoulas was well known to police, particularly in recent days in relation to assaults, and was charged last weekend.

'What we do know of the person is there is an extensive family violence history involved,' Mr Ashton told reporters.

'We have mental health and drug-related issues in the background of this particular person.

'He has been coming to our attention more recently over recent days in relation to assaults, family violence-related assaults.

' Amid the carnage on Bourke St was half a mangled pram stuck on the bonnet of the car.

What appeared to be the other half of the pram lay on the ground at a pedestrian crossing about 100 metres up the road.

Former Victorian police chief Christine Nixon was in Bourke St and was almost hit by the car and, after seeing the pram on the ground, helped the distraught mother nearby who could not find her child.

'She kept asking me 'where's the baby?',' Ms Nixon told ABC 774.

Police believe Gargasoulas had been on a criminal rampage since about 2am, when he is accused of critically stabbing his brother outside their public housing flat in Windsor.

Mr Ashton said police made several attempts to arrest him throughout the day, but the 26-year-old kept evading them on his erratic journey across town and back.

At 11.

45am police armed with guns and tasers tried to pull him over on the Bolte Bridge but aborted their pursuit because his driving was too dangerous.

Police say a woman, who may have been hostage in Gargasoulas', jumped out of the moving vehicle.

Gargasoulas was next spotted doing burnouts and screaming out his car window at terrified bystanders outside Flinders Street Station at around 1.

30pm.

He then headed down Swanston St and turned left into Bourke St where he began mowing people down in the pedestrian mall.

The three dead were each found at separate locations along Bourke Street, Mr Ashton said, suggesting they weren't related.

He was eventually hit in the arm by shots police fired at him before his car crashed and he was arrested.

He was seen lying on the ground dressed only in red underwear and white shoes with several police offices standing over him.

'There's someone on the middle of the ground and there's blood all over the street,' Rishi Hathiramani, a CBD shopkeeper, told AAP.

Some CBD businesses went into lockdown, while others were evacuated.

City office worker William Mulholland said he came out of a laneway and saw a number of bodies lying on the pavement receiving CPR from police and emergency workers.

He said his friend came out of the RACV building on Bourke St and saw a body lying on the pavement in front of him.

Victims were also taken to The Royal Melbourne Hospital and The Alfred hospital Other people have also gone to hospitals in shock after witnessing the incident, police said.

Prime minister Malcolm Turnbull tweeted his sympathy.

'Our prayers and deepest sympathy are with the victims their families, of this vicious criminal attack in Bourke St Melbourne,' he tweeted.

BMW M4 GTS v S 1000 RR Track Test

A couple of year’s ago, BMW did somethingreally clever.

They very sneakily hit the scene with a newperformance model, the fastest BMW road car ever built.

But, no one knew about it, because they didthis top secret model was developed under the cover of an official MotoGP safety car,taking it from racetrack to racetrack, improving Now the production model of that very carhas materialised.

This is the M4 GTS, and well, to keep thingsin context , we want to find out just how fast the real-life version is – not in frontof a MotoGP bike, but against a road-going version of one.

That bike is BMW’s 2017 S1000RR.

Now, these two machines belong on a racetrackand both sit at the top of their respective line-ups… We’ll get to the finer points of eitherin a moment… but first – it’s time for a good old fashion drag race… OK, so we know who is the comprehensive winnerthere.

But there’s more to this comparison thangoing fast in a straight line.

So what exactly were BMW testing during safetycar duties? Well, nestled in amongst all the bling here,among other items is a water injection system, which sprays a fine mist of distilled waterinto the intake manifold plenum chamber The water injection technology reduces thetemperature of the intake air allowing a higher turbo boost pressure and earlier spark timing.

The resulting 368kW of power and 600Nm timeenables a 0-100 time of 3.

8 seconds.

There’s also a full titanium exhaust system,and M coil-over suspension system with adjustable rebound and compression settings and sharpersteering.

It might have lost the stickers and sirensof the safety car, but make no mistake, the GTS is track focused.

The interior is striped out and fitted witha roll cage, there are no rear seats.

In some BMW circles, the GTS is quietly referredto as the widow maker… And I can see why.

Regular M4? You can just forget about it because thisthing is on another playing field altogether.

The power… Its quite similar from down low, but thenyou 5500rpm and the water injection system really comes to fruition.

WOW! This is a car that you need to learn.

Acutally, this is a car that you need to respect.

The way it accrues revs from middling revsout to the 7-6 limiter has to be felt to be believed… It is incredible… Coming onto the main straight here at theSydney Motorsport Park.

Wow! The feel of the M4 GTS is most rewarding.

Compared to the regular M4, everything feelssharper, and more response.

In fact, cultivate enough feel inside thecar and it soon starts to move around through the corners.

That’s when the fun really begins.

Into turn two, a double apex corner… Squirt the throttle and hoohoo!!!!!! The M4 is a car that bobs and fidgets.

It is hard-edged and, if we’re honest.

A little highly strung.

It is as close to a road-going racecar asyou get… And it demands respect… Next up, the S1000RR.

Fitted with a launch control function andpit lane speed limiter, this 146kW machine tips the scales at only 176kg dry… Now if I thought the M4 GTS was fast in a straight line lets try this on for size Holy Fark! [LOTS MORE BEEPING!] There's 260km's an hour Wow, that is fast, that is scary fast! Well that was immensely fast, this is crazy to say this I can’t believe how user-friendly it is.

There’s a really positive turn-in response,it sits poised through corners, and the electric parameters are so good, you can push the biketo a point and know that the safety net will figurately catch you.

Each machine has its benefits but as for whichis the most rewarding around a closed circuit? That title arguably rests with the M4 GTS… But in saying that, not everyone could livewith the M4’s hardcore bias… so on that front the S1000RR wins back crucial points.

There is one other little thing that I forgotto mention.

At $300k, the M4 GTS is roughly 10 times theprice of the humble S1000RR.

And with only 700 built globally and soldout before going on sale, you can’t exactly waltz into a dealership and put down yourorder.

So as for which is fastest out of the box,if you were to buy it today.

2017 Holden Trax LTZ Review

Pint size SUVs may be the runt of the litterbut, just because they are affordable, it doesn’t mean that they should miss out onfeatures.

Recognising that buyers are looking for morefor their money, Holden’s updated its Trax range.

This LTZ model comes packed with more driverassistance aids and technology.

Updated for 2017 the whole Holden Trax rangenow boasts Apple Car Play and Android Auto Integration, Projection Headlamps with daytimerunning lamps and fresh new styling, both inside and out.

This up spec LTZ model also adds blind spotmonitoring and rear cross traffic alert; features which are not always found at this end ofthe market.

The Trax LTZ is powered by a 1.

4 litre, fourcylinder turbo petrol engine which is now also available, for the first time, on theentry level LS.

In all models it is paired with a six speedautomatic transmission with manual select.

The 1.

4 litre turbo engine is zesty enoughand it is certainly adequate for around town driving.

But on inclines it has to work quite hardand is a bit noisy under load.

The manual select does allow for better controlof gearing but I am not a fan of the shift amounted system.

Paddle shifters are so much easier to use.

The Trax range has also been updated witha number of styling changes.

There is a new exterior treatment on the frontand rear and new interior console and trim.

The LTZ also adds new LED taillights and indicatorson the wing mirrors and an updated driver information display.

It combines to give the car a more of premiumlook.

Unfortunately the premium feel doesn’t carryon throughout the cabin.

Some of the plastics are pretty hard and theleather appointed seats, while they are heated in the front, are not as plush as some ofthe competitors.

This is something that the best-selling MazdaCX-3 does really well.

All is not lost, however, as the cabin layoutin the Trax is very straightforward.

The position of the controls are where youexpect them to be and functions like cruise control are easy to use.

The seven inch touch-screen display is plainbut functional too.

It is not trying too hard and it is thereforea breeze to get used to.

And that is important for newer and olderdrivers who are likely to be the main buyers of the Trax – the less complication the better.

Disappointingly there is no proprietary navigation,only the tools that come with Apple Car Play and Android Auto and I reckon, for the price,buyers deserve a better navigation system.

While it is disappointing that there is noavailable autonomous emergency braking, those other driver assistance aids are an importantinclusion and the technology and design updates will ensure that Trax remains fresh and relevantamong the competition.

Steep climbs or descents can be a challengefor any off roader, but some golden rules apply to help you get uphill or down safely,and with greater confidence.

Of course, this advice is general in nature.

We’d recommend seeking professional trainingwith a four wheel drive club, or a training organisation, just like we have.

Before driving up or down a steep hill, it’simportant to inspect the terrain carefully.

Look for loose surface hazards, such as rocks,and be aware of the placement of ruts and tree routes.

Try and determine the smoothest path possible.

It can be difficult to access your cargo areashould you become stuck halfway up or down a steep hill, so it’s a good idea to keepyou recovery gear close to hand.

Consider fitting your D shackles and recoverystrap before setting off.

Climbing or descending a steep grade is allabout traction and momentum, so be sure to set your tyre pressures according to the terrain.

Your owner’s manual will provide more detail.

When it comes to steep hills, slow and steadywins the race.

We recommend selecting a low range four wheeldrive, and depending on the grade, first or second gear, and remember to keep a steadythrottle.

If fitted, you may also consider using yourdifferential lock.

Gear selection is equally important when headingdownhill.

Let your engine do the braking for you, asheavy brake application can result in an uncontrolled slide.

[Winston] There will be times you want to use thebrakes still, but the engine and the gearing will be doing most of the work for you.

It will slow the car right up, and as you’recoming over those really steep sections, yes, touch the brakes a little bit, if you feelyourself losing a little bit of traction, then release the brakes, and you’ll findthat all of a sudden your steering comes back into play again.

[Nadine] And remember, never drive across steepruts or attack a hill at an angle as this could result in a nasty role over.

If you can’t see where you’re going, havea friend help you over two-way radio or with clear visual instructions.

And if you get stuck, remember to set thepark brake, select park, and chock the wheels to prevent your vehicle from rolling away.

And if travelling in convoy, make sure youleave plenty of distance between yourself and the car in front.

There are no guarantees when off-roading,and a lot of variables, but preparation will always work in your favour.

Remember, take your time and assess each situationthoroughly, and you’ll get to your destination safely and more relaxed.
